Dear Reader,
RSAC 2026 is coming this March! Where did the year go?
Well, to be honest, it’s only been 11 months since the last RSAC so maybe we can count on the conference coming in February next year. But we digress.
We will be at RSAC 2026 taking a handful of meetings between 9 and noon, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If you want to talk about press releases, we will politely listen, but we probably won’t cover it… because we just don’t cover press releases. We cover news and trends.
What we really want to talk about is the end of consolidation and a return to decentralized security. That is an underlying theme we have noticed growing in the past year and are predicting it will emerge as the new buzzword at the conference. We could be wrong based on the titles of the announced sessions and keynotes. There still seems to be an enumeration with AI and agents, but tradeshow programs tend to reflect whatever was hot the year before. We are looking ahead.
We will also be looking at the use of fear to sell tools and services. Frankly, fear really moves products. It doesn’t really solve problems. Coming soon on the podcast, Crucial Tech, we will have a discussion with Doug Kersten, CISO for Appfire, related to that subject but will follow that theme through the year.
The cost of cybercrime is part of that fear-based sales approach and we really want to drill down on what that cost actually is. For example, one of the boogie men listed in the cost of cybercrime is “corporate reputation.” Every company that has been breached, based on the research we’ve done, has come back stronger and more profitable. They may take a hit for a couple of months but there are so many beaches announced that the customer base just doesn’t care. We are officially calling that BS and we want to talk to people who disagree and agree. Bring your data to prove your position because we will bring ours.
Now, a little bit of business. We are making a readership push for the first quarter of the year so we are taking down our paywall on premium content. All we want is your name and email address. If you are reading this newsletter, we already have it, but the good news is as of today, you have a subscription to the magazine as well. So tell your friends, coworkers and clients to sign up. The more readers we have the more chance we will land sponsors to take up the slack in revenue. And this way, when we do an article featuring you or a client you don’t have to ask us to let you know when the article comes out or if we can make a screen shot or do something else a clipping service would charge you to do.
That’s it for this month. Sign up for subscriptions. Call us about media training. Inquire about the low, low cost of sponsorship (really, you’d be surprised how cheap it is). Support friendly neighborhood independent journalism.
